State of the Arts Night
European Union × Hirshhorn Museum
Twofold Common supported the design and execution of State of the Arts Night, an after-hours cultural experience created by the European Union in partnership with the Hirshhorn Museum. The event brought together artists from Europe and the United States for an immersive evening of performance, dialogue, and exchange—designed to demonstrate the power of transatlantic collaboration through art.
The experience blended interactive installations, live performances, a curated European market, and a late-night music program—transforming the museum into a dynamic environment where policy, culture, and community converged.
-
For its third annual State of the Arts Night, the European Union partnered with the Hirshhorn Museum to advance a clear objective: strengthen cultural diplomacy in the United States through an immersive public experience.
The event needed to elevate EU visibility, showcase transatlantic artistic collaboration, and deliver measurable impact—all within the constraints of a high-profile museum environment, strict institutional brand standards, government protocols, and a defined budget.
Twofold Common was engaged to unify strategy, design, and execution into a cohesive experience worthy of a global partnership.
-
In parallel, we translated policy goals into a carefully orchestrated audience journey.
The evening included:
A two-stage program featuring artists from nine EU Member States in collaboration with American artists
A European Market with 11 curated vendors
A VIP reception for high-value stakeholders
An immersive environment shaped by lighting, staging, music, and spatial flow
Twofold Common led vendor sourcing, spatial planning, budget stewardship, run-of-show coordination, and on-site management. Programming was intentionally sequenced to move guests from dialogue to immersion to celebration—embodying the spirit of transatlantic collaboration.
The event was delivered on schedule, within budget, and without incident.
-
We developed a central visual concept that aligned the European Union and Hirshhorn Museum identities into one cohesive system.
Deliverables included:
Event visual identity
Two vinyl stage banners
EU Market banner
Wayfinding and environmental graphics
Custom gobos integrating both institutional marks
Working within the architectural limitations of the museum, the design emphasized clarity, elevation, and strategic brand visibility—ensuring EU presence was unmistakable yet contextually integrated.
Every touchpoint reinforced the larger diplomatic objective.
-
State of the Arts Night sold out, welcoming approximately 1,600 attendees across public audiences, cultural leaders, and policy stakeholders.
The activation:
Elevated EU visibility among U.S. audiences
Positioned the EU as a confident and creative global partner
Created platforms for dialogue and exchange
Advanced the EU’s Policy and Outreach objectives in the United States
EUD staff reported the program was exceptionally well organized and successful.
